The utterly addictive game Angry Birds recently broke an internet records: it became the first game in gaming history to be downloaded over 500 million times. What makes this achievement even more impressive is that gamers aren’t just downloading the game and moving on to the next one.
Rovio has gone on record stating that users on average log about 5 million hours of Angry Birds play time daily. More than 266 billion levels of Angry Birds have been played and close to 400 billion birds have been catapulted at the dastardly pigs.
“This is a fantastic landmark achievement for us, and we’re extremely delighted to see such an incredible amount of people enjoying our games,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “We remain committed to creating more fun experiences and bringing exceptional quality to Angry Birds Fans everywhere.”
The game has been a run away success for Rovio and has quickly led to expanding the game’s appeal into other markets. Rovio has been selling Angry Birds plush toys and related paraphernalia for a short period of time, but have shipped more than ten million Angry Birds toys to merchandisers worldwide (this doesn’t the millions of knock off products coming out of China these days). Rovio opened their first Angry Birds store in Finland on 11-11-11. Rovio has made no secret that they plan to produce an Angry Birds major motion picture and have even been discussing building Angry Birds themed amusement parks. Given Rovio’s success thus far, the sky is the limit for the Angry Birds.
